Khachkar in Goshavank

Goshavank ( Armenian Գոշավանք ) is a former monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church from the 12th to 13th centuries and is located in the village of Gosch in the northeast Armenian province of Tavush . Another medieval monastery, Haghartsin , is located in the village of Gosha , a few kilometers away.

The well-preserved ensemble of buildings in Goshavank is a popular tourist destination.

Goshawank is known for the particularly finely crafted khachkars . Goshavank was built on the site of the Nor Ghetik monastery, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1188. The well-known scholar and clergyman Mkhitar Gosh was involved in the reconstruction . All the buildings in the complex are built next to one another, except for the Hripsime Chapel, which is within sight on the opposite hillside.

The main building is the Church of Our Lady ( Surb Astvatsatsin ) consecrated in 1197 with a gawit on its west side, which was completed at the same time . In 1237 a chapel for Gregory the Illuminator was added to the south . In the southeast the free-standing church of Saint Gregory ( Surb Grigor ) was preserved, a scaled-down replica of the main church.
