Howhannawank ( Armenian Հովհաննավանք ; translated Johannes Monastery ) is a monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Ohanawan ( Aragazotn Province ), about 5 kilometers north of the provincial capital Ashtarak and a good 20 kilometers northwest of Yerevan . He is dedicated to John the Baptist .

The monastery is located on the right edge of the Kassagh Gorge , five kilometers south of the Saghmosavank Monastery, founded by the same prince of the Vashutian dynasty . The monastery is surrounded by a wall, outside of which only a few remains of buildings have been preserved that served secular purposes. Legend has it that Howhannawank was founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator . The construction of the complex will be around the 5th / 6th Dated century. Most of the buildings date from the 13th century, including the cathedral, which was built from 1216 to 1221 and renovated from 1652 to 1734. The oldest part of Howhannawank is the single-nave St. John's Church, supported by a barrel vault , which borders the younger main building in the north. In the Gawit , which dates from the middle of the 13th century and adjoins the main building to the west, the dome was replaced by a twelve-column rotunda in 1274 . Earthquakes in 1679 and 1918 caused severe damage to Howhannawank.
