Chapel of Our Lady of Dzordsor

Dzordsor , also Zorzor, Dzordzor ( Armenian Ձորձոր ) is an Armenian apostolic monastery from the 9th century near the village of Barun in the Maku district of the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan . The current monastery building served from the 14th century until it was destroyed in the 17th century under Shah Abbas I when he decided to deport the Armenians from the region.

The Chapel of the Holy Mother of God (in Eastern Armenian : Surb Astvatsatsin ) is the only remnant of the monastery complex. The construction of this cross- domed church , which is crowned in the middle by a sixteen-sided drum with a dome, dates back to the 9th to 10th centuries, and its use extended into the 14th century. After the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, the building was moved 600 meters from its place of origin in 1987–1988 because a dam was to be built on the Makuchay River ( Zangmar ). In line with the Armenian Apostolic Church, the building was also renovated.

The chapel has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Armenian Monasteries in Iran since 2008, together with the St. Thaddäus Monastery and the St. Stephanos Monastery .
