Sepulcher of Safi ad-Din
The burial shrine of Safi ad-Din ( Persian آرامگاه شیخ صفیالدین اردبیلی, DMG Ārāmgāh-e Šaiḫ Ṣafiyoddīn-e Ardabīlī ) is an architectural complex in the Iranian city of Ardabil in the province of the same name , consisting of a former Sufi center ( Chāneghāh ) and the tomb of Sheikh Safi ad-Din , the namesake of the dynasty Safavids , exists.
Safi ad-Din founded the first Sufi "monastery" of the Azerbaijan region here, it also served as a residence for him and his successors. After his death, a grave tower was built for him, and his family members also found their eternal rest in a specially built annex. With the accession of his great-grandson Ismail to the throne , the building complex assumed the function of a grave shrine, Ismail himself was also buried here. The members of the Safavid dynasty made a pilgrimage to the burial place of their ancestors, and further additions and embellishments were made.
The center of the area is a large, rectangular inner courtyard, which is accessed through a front garden and a forecourt. To the northeast there is an octagonal prayer hall ( Masdschid-e Dschannat Sara / "Paradise Mosque "), to the southeast a prayer hall ( Ghandil Chane / "Lantern House "), from which the grave tower of Sheikh Safi to the south is accessible. From the lantern house one can also enter the mausoleum of Shah Ismail. Furthermore, the area, connected to the south-east of the lantern house, houses a large ballroom in the “porcelain house” ( Tschini Chane ) and a small residential wing ( Haram Chane ).
In 2010, the building complex was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
The site is registered with the number 64 on the national monument list of Iran.
