Dscholfa ( Persian جلفا Dscholfā , DMG Ǧolfā ) is a small town in the same-named Schahrestan in the province of East Azerbaijan in northwestern Iran . In 2006 Dscholfa had 4983 inhabitants.

geography

The city is located a good 100 km northwest of Tabriz on the left bank of the Macaw , which marks the state border with Azerbaijan . On the other bank of the river is the city of Culfa in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic .

traffic

A railway line from Tabriz to Jolfa , built by the Russian military and opened in 1916, was the first long-distance railway line in Iran. The train station of jolfa is the Iranian border station for the railway line through which the railway to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic leads. After traffic had been idle for many years, since 2016 once a week non-stop trains Naxçıvan - Mashhad have been running again , which are changed at the border station. The line leading to Armenia is interrupted due to the political situation between the two countries, so that this railway border crossing - in contrast to the times of the Soviet Union - is of little importance.
