Ruin of the Friday Mosque of Ardabil

The Friday mosque of Ardabil (pers. Dschomʽe Masdsched ) is a listed ruin of a no longer usable Friday mosque in Ardabil , Iran .

The current buildings are on remains from the time of the Seljuks , who ruled Iran in the second half of the 11th and 12th centuries. There may be older buildings at this point. During excavations, it was found that the mosque complex used to be larger, but was destroyed over time. The brick masonry ruin is now protected by a temporary protective roof made of steel girders and a corrugated iron roof. The resulting cylindrical stump of the minaret is stabilized from the outside by a surrounding steel frame.

The mosque is located in the Pir Shamso-d-Din district in the middle of a cemetery and consists of three parts:

  • The minaret, built in the style of the Seljuk era from 1473 (or 1474) (878 hq), consists of two octagonal parts, each with a side length of 2.10 m, and a cylindrical tower with a diameter of 5 m. Two inscriptions show that Uzun Hasan (* 1423, ruled 1453–1478) gave the Aq Qoyunlu the order to build it.
  • The second part of the complex is the Tirpusch , i. H. Beam ceiling, mosque with a length of 12.5 m and a width of 9.8 m. The roof is supported by 9 wooden pillars.
  • The third part of the complex consists of 4 rooms with a dome . It was built from bricks and partially decorated with tiles.
