Jaber Saeed Salem (born January 3, 1975 in Bulgaria ), born Jani Martschokow ( Bulgarian Яни Марчоков ), is a former Bulgarian- Qatari weightlifter .

Athletic career

Salem's first international competition was the 1995 European Junior Championships in Be'er Scheva . At the age of 20 Salem started here under his maiden name Jani Martschokow for Bulgaria in the class up to 108 kg and achieved 360.0 kg (160.0 / 200.0 kg), which meant third place. In the same year he competed at the Junior World Championships in Warsaw , where he lifted 355.0 kg (165.0 / 190.0 kg) and again won bronze.

In 1999, the Qatari Association was able to win over several Bulgarian weightlifters. Among them was Martschokow, who now took the name Jaber Saeed Salem. Salem made his first start for Qatar that same year at the World Championships in Athens . Here he lifted the super heavyweight over 105 kg for the first time and was able to place with 455.0 kg (205.0 / 250.0 kg) behind Andrei Tschemerkin with 457.5 kg and ahead of Hossein Rezazadeh with 447.5 kg.

With his performance from the previous year, Salem was one of the favorites at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . He increased his performance to 460.0 kg (205.0 / 255.0 kg), which was only enough for fourth place due to the strong competition. The winner was Rezazadeh with 472.5 kg ahead of Ronny Weller with 467.5 kg and Tschemerkin with 462.5 kg.

At the 2001 World Championships in Antalya , Salem was able to win all three gold medals with 460.0 kg (210.0 / 250.0 kg). In his last attempt he failed at 263.0 kg, which would have set a new world record in pushing. In 2003 he was able to win the world title in snatch again with 210.0 kg, but did not take part in the jerk afterwards.

Salem was registered for the 2004 Olympic Games, but it was not clear that he did not take part.

In 2005 Salem placed at the World Cup with 446.0 kg (201.0 / 245.0 kg) behind Rezazedeh with 461.0 kg and Yevgeny Tschigischew , who lifted 457.0 kg. Salem played his last world championship in 2007 in Chiang Mai , where he won bronze again with 435.0 kg (195.0 / 240.0 kg) in a duel. The winner was Viktors Ščerbatihs with 442.0 kg, ahead of Tschigischew with 441.0 kg.
