Qinhuangdao ( Chinese 秦皇島 市 / 秦皇岛 市 , Pinyin Qínhuángdǎo shì - "Island of the (first) Qin Emperor") is a large city with a coal port in the People's Republic of China . The city has around 2.9 million inhabitants, 967,877 of them in its three districts (2010 census). Located in the northeast of Hebei Province , it borders on neighboring Liaoning Province . In 1900 foreign troops came ashore here because of the Boxer Rebellion . During the Olympic Games in 2008 , a total of twelve preliminary round football games were played here.
Administrative structure
Qinhuangdao is made up of three municipalities, three counties and one autonomous county:
- Haigang district (海港 区), 121 km², approx. 510,000 inhabitants (2003);
- Shanhaiguan District (山海关 区), 192 km², approx. 140,000 inhabitants (2003);
- Beidaihe district (北戴河 区), 70 km², approx. 60,000 inhabitants (2003);
- Changli district (昌黎 县), 1,184 km², approx. 550,000 inhabitants (2003), capital: Changli municipality (昌黎 镇);
- Funing district (抚宁县), 1,646 km², approx. 510,000 inhabitants (2003), capital: Funing municipality (抚宁 镇);
- Lulong district (卢龙 县), 945 km², approx. 420,000 inhabitants (2003), main town: Lulong municipality (卢龙 镇);
- Qinglong Autonomous District of the Manchu (青龙 满族 自治县), 3,309 km², approx. 510,000 inhabitants (2003), capital: Qinglong Municipality (青龙 镇).
