Beidaihe
Beidaihe ( Chinese 北戴河 区 , Pinyin Běidàihé qū ) is a district of the prefecture -level city of Qinhuangdao in the east of Hebei Province in the People's Republic of China . The city district has an area of 70.14 km² and about 70,000 inhabitants (end of 2004).
The renowned seaside resort is best known for the fact that many members of the Communist Party's Politburo spend their summer holidays on its beaches. The beaches are therefore partly reserved for privileged party officials and wealthy foreign tourists. The tranquility of the urban area of Beidaihe is more like a western seaside resort than a Chinese coastal city.
Beidaihe is also known to ornithologists as a highly frequented transit station for migratory birds.
location
Beidaihe is 4 hours by train, 2 hours by direct train or 30 minutes by plane northeast of Beijing on the Bohai Coast and is one of the most famous seaside resorts in China. A 10-kilometer beach stretches from the mouth of the Dai River to Jingshan Hill.
history
Beidaihe only gained importance as a seaside resort when English engineers who were building the Tianjin - Shanhaiguan railway came here to relax. Foreigners and wealthy Chinese built mansions that burned down during the Boxer Rebellion but were later rebuilt.
From 1900 the Peitaiho light railway operated here .
After 1949, Beidaihe became a workers' resort and a number of sanatoriums were established. Top officials like Jiang Qing also had properties here.
Administrative structure
At the community level, Beidaihe is made up of two street districts and two large communities . These are:
- Xishan Street District (西山 街道, "West Mountain");
- Dongshan Street District (东山 街道, "East Mountain");
- Greater community Haibin (海滨镇);
- Greater community Daihe (戴河镇).
