The German weightlifter Ronny Weller had to give up injured during his fifth and last Olympic participation. The first discipline, tearing, had problems with the right shoulder. The most successful German Olympic participant besides Birgit Fischer could not win the hoped-for fifth Olympic medal in a row. The winner Hossein Rezazadeh repeated his Olympic victory from Sydney with a world record. The actual duel result for Rezazadeh would be 473.5 kg. According to the rules of the World Weightlifting Association, a duel result must be divisible by 2.5. If this is not the case, the next lower value, which is divisible by 2.5, is given as a total, in this case 472.5 kg instead of 473.5 kg.
