Paweł Najdek (* 9. April 1973 in Nowy Tomyśl , Poland ) is a former weightlifter in the super heavyweight ( weight class 105+ kg).

Athletic career

Pawel Najdek started lifting weights at the age of 13 on the advice of his physical education teacher .

His international career started in 1990 at the Junior World Championships in Sarajevo in the class up to 100 kg, where he finished 9th overall with 315.0 kg in a duel (140.0 kg in snatch / 175.0 kg in push ) - behind his compatriot Waldemar Malak , who won the silver medal with a total of 362.5 kg.

In the following years he was able to continuously improve his performance, so that he reached 3rd place overall at the Junior European Championships in Cardiff in 1992 with 350.0 kg, which he achieved in 1993 at the Junior World Championships in Cheb with a total of 370.0 kg (165 , 0 kg / 205.0 kg) - but already in the next higher weight class up to 108 kg (2nd heavyweight).

In the same year Pawel Najdek switched to the highest weight class 108+ kg (super heavyweight) and achieved his greatest sporting success to date at the Junior European Championship in Valencia with overall rank 1 (367.1 kg).

His next appearance on the international stage took place again in 1996 - but for the first time with the seniors, at the European Championship in Stavanger , where he finished 9th overall in the class up to 108 kg (2nd heavyweight) (362.5 kg ).

Since the European Championships in Rijeka in 1997, Pawel Najdek competed in all major championships up to the end of his career in the highest weight class, almost always fighting for podium positions - some times even for victory, which he never achieved internationally. This was mainly due to a certain weakness in tearing compared to its direct competitors.

His greatest successes in the course of his career were the silver medals in a duel at the 2001 European Championships in Trenčín with 420.0 kg (175.0 kg / 245.0 kg) behind Viktors Ščerbatihs (440.0 kg) and in front of his compatriot Grzegorz Kleszcz ( 417.0 kg) and at the European Championship in Antalya 2002 with 430.0 kg (185.0 kg / 245.0 kg) behind Ronny Weller (450.0 kg) and in front of Alexei Kolokolzew (427.5 kg).

The silver medals in pushing at the 1998 World Championships in Lahti with 232.5 kg behind the overall winner Andrei Tschmerkin (240.0 kg) and the 2001 World Championships in Antalya with a Polish record of 250.0 kg (4th overall with personal Record of 435.0 kg), in which the overall winner Jaber Saeed Salem (460.0 kg) also won the gold medal in the push with 250.0 kg only because of his lower body weight.

Particular highlights of his career were of course the participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 (7th place / 425.0 kg) and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens (6th place / 430.0 kg).

Pavel Najdek's last international appearance before the end of his career as a weightlifter was the European Championships in Lignano 2008, where he finished 7th in the victory of Viktors Ščerbatihs (447.0 kg) with 409.0 kg - even behind his compatriot Grzegorz Kleszcz (5th place) with 415.0 kg).

Coaching career

Since Pawel Najdek gained experience as a coach during his sporting career, it was only a logical step for him to pursue a career as a coach after retiring. From 2009 to 2010, he coached the Polish junior national team, where talented weightlifters such as the later Olympic champion in London 2012 (class up to 85 kg), Adrian Zieliński , were among his protégés. Most recently he worked as the trainer of the up-and-coming Irish weightlifting talent Clarence Kennedy .

Others

  • Pawel Najdek's competition weight during the most successful phase of his career was 135-140 kg.
  • The coach with the greatest influence on his career was, according to his own statement, Ryszard Szewczyk (the " Polish Abadzijev "), long-time and successful coach of the Polish Olympic weightlifting team.
  • In addition to his work as a trainer, Pawel Najdek also works as a sports and biology teacher at a secondary school and as an employee at the center for young people with problematic social backgrounds in Opalenica and is a member of the district administrator of Nowy Tomyśl .
