Opalenica ( German Opalenitza ) is a town with 9,000 inhabitants in the powiat Nowotomyski , Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland . Opalenica is around 37 km from Poznan ( Poznań ) away. The Opalenica commune borders on the following communes: Nowy Tomyśl , Kuślin (Nowy Tomyśl County), Duszniki (Szamotuły County), Buk (Poznań County), Granowo and Grodzisk Wielkopolski . (Grodzisk district).
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1393. Opalenica, which was then owned by Ticz Bar de Opalenicza (Tietz-Dietrich Bär), a representative of a Pomeranian knightly family, received town charter between 1399 and 1401.
From 1793 to 1807, Opalenica came under Prussian rule temporarily as a result of the second partition of Poland . Due to the Congress of Vienna , Opalenica came back to Prussia ( Posen Province ) in 1815 , where it was administered as part of the Buk district and, from 1887, the Graetz district. In 1918 it returned to Poland.
Opalenica has a city partnership with the Dutch Zevenbergen and Königslutter am Elm and Storkow in Germany.
Until 2010, the Remes Cup , the largest youth football tournament in Poland, took place in Opalenica every year .

Opalenica is still served by trains on the Frankfurt (Oder) –Poznań railway line, the Kościan – Opalenica railway line and the former Opalenitza small railways have been closed for passenger traffic since 1991 and 1995, respectively.

Buildings
- The late Gothic St. Matthias Church with a separate bell tower was built at the beginning of the 17th century.
- St. Joseph's Church was built in 1900 in neo-Gothic style for the Protestant community according to plans by Ludwig von Tiedemann and was taken over by the Catholic Church in 1945 .
- The cemetery chapel was built in the Mannerist style in the first half of the 17th century .
- The town hall was built in 1897 in the neo-renaissance style.
