Waldemar Malak (born July 17, 1970 in Danzig , † November 13, 1992 in Wejherowo ) was a Polish weightlifter .
Athletic career
Malak's first international appearance, at the age of 19, was the 1990 Junior World Championships in Sarajevo , where he was in the 1st heavyweight up to 100 kg with a body weight of 94.25 kg 362.5 kg (170.0 / 192.5 kg ) was able to realize in a duel and thus won silver. The 1991 European championship in Władysławowo was his first senior competition. Here he competed in the middle-heavy weight up to 90 kg, but after 160.0 kg in snatching he could not bring in a valid attempt in the jerk and thus remained unplaced.
At his only world championship in 1991 in Donaueschingen , Malak switched back to the class up to 100 kg and took fourth place with 377.5 kg (172.5 / 205.0 kg). The first placed Igor Sadykov achieved 415.0 kg. At the European Championship in Szekszárd in the same year , Malak increased to 395.0 kg (182.5 / 212.5 kg) in a duel and won the Vice European Championship behind Tymur Tajmasow with 415.0 kg and ahead of Andor Szanyi , who was 392.5 kg raised.
With his performance at the European Championship, Malak had a chance of a podium placement at the 1992 Olympic Games . He was able to achieve this with 400.0 kg (185.0 / 215.0 kg), he won bronze behind Viktor Tregubow with 410.0 kg and Tajmasow with 402.5 kg.
Just a few months after the Olympic Games, Waldemar Malak was killed in a traffic accident on November 13, 1992 at the age of 22. The Waldemar Malak Memorial Tournament is held every year in Gdansk in his honor.
