In February 2004, the IOC gave Iraq permission to take part in the Olympics for the first time since 1994. A total of 29 Iraqi athletes were registered. The 100-meter runner Alaa Hikmet was the only woman who started for her country. Iraq's last medal success at this point was 44 years ago. 1960 in Rome the weightlifter Abdul Wahid Aziz won bronze in the lightweight .
