East Timor first took part in the Summer Olympics at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . Previously, East Timorese athletes had already participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney as Independent Olympians . The delegation consisted of two athletes and four officials. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was Agueda Amaral.

  • Women: Agueda Amaral (marathon): After 3:18:25, Amaral crossed the finish line second to last in 65th place.
  • Men: Gil da Cruz Trindade (marathon): Trinidade was two minutes away from the leaders after five kilometers, but had to give up between the 20-kilometer checkpoint and halfway through the route. At this point he had dropped to last place, twelve minutes behind the nearest runner.
