When Amaral reached the stadium in Sydney after the run, she fell to her knees and kissed the floor. A referee knelt down next to her and made Amaral aware that she had to run one more lap in the stadium. Amaral finished 43rd out of 45 participants who finished the run, with a time of 3:10:55 h.

The year before, she and her family had to flee from their house to the mountains during the unrest that Indonesian militias had triggered on the occasion of the vote on the independence of East Timor . When she returned, the house had been ransacked - her only pair of running shoes was also missing. She received two new pairs in Australia.

In Athens, Amaral carried the flag of East Timor at the opening ceremony. She came in 65th place in the marathon in 3:18:25 h.

At the first Dili marathon on June 20, 2010, Amaral was third with a time of 3:22:26 hours, in 2011 she was fourth with 3:21:54 hours.
