From East Timor were in the Summer Olympics in 2000 in Sydney four athletes as independent Olympic athletes at the start.

After the residents of East Timor had voted for independence in a referendum on August 30, 1999 and the country was then placed under UN administration , the International Olympic Committee wanted the country's athletes - even before the East Timorese National Olympic Committee was founded enable participation in the Summer Games. Instead of a national flag , Victor Ramos carried the Olympic flag at the opening ceremony .
The Canadian Frank Fowlie acted as trainer and team manager .
The four athletes in the delegation competed in three sports.
