Some East Timorese youth gangs act as martial arts clubs. A study from 2006 indicates the number of members for the 15 to 20 large martial arts groups alone as 20,000, an estimated 90,000 more are said to be unregistered members. That would mean that 70% of young Timorese men practice martial arts. Due to the high level of violence between the youth gangs, a law was passed in 2008 that heavily regulates the practice of martial arts. The national martial arts association is called the Association for Martial Arts Timor-Leste (FESTIL).

Thomas Americo was the first East Timorese (officially the first Indonesian) to fight for the belt of a world boxing champion in 1981, but lost the fight. He had previously won the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) championship in 1980 .

Thailand funded 15 athletes and three officials to travel to the Games, with East Timor participating in tennis, taekwondo and karate competitions. But, for example, the tennis player José do Jesus did not even have his own racket and therefore no match practice.

In the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane in 2009 won Oriando dos Santos , Alves Almeida and Soarescorreia Kumite for East Timor bronze.

At the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Palembang , Luisa Dos Santos won bronze in Taekwondo . After all, there were the first gold and silver medals for East Timor. The futsal team were defeated 56-0 by Portugal and 76-0 by Brazil. Against Macau, the defeat was less clear with 13: 4. The extreme results led to discussions as to whether stricter selection criteria should be introduced for the next Jogos da Lusofonia. The East Timorese athletes could not claim a single victory in the other competitions either. The women's volleyball team received the bronze medal anyway, as only three teams took part in this competition.

At the Jogos da Lusofonia 2009 , East Timor landed again at the bottom of the nations ranking. Likewise in 2014 , after all with a bronze medal.
