However, the competitions began on October 4th due to restrictions imposed by the international football calendar. The 2006 Games were the first multi-sport event organized by the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries under the banner of ACOLOP , the Association of Portuguese-Language Olympic Committees. Participants were nine members of ACOLOP ( Angola , Brazil , Guinea-Bissau , Cape Verde , Macau / China , Mozambique , East Timor , Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe ) and two associate members ( India and Sri Lanka ). At the 2006 Games, 48 competitions were held in eight sports.
The games opened at the Macau Stadium and ended at the Macau East Asian Games Dome . The mascot was a dog named Leo . The Portuguese word for lion “leão” sounds the same as the Chinese “Lai Ao” , which means “come to Macau” .
