The third Jogos da Lusofonia (dt. 3. Lusophone games) have from 18 to 29. January 2014 in Goa , India occurred.

The multisport event of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries was organized by the "Association of Portuguese-Speaking Olympic Committees", the ACOLOP .

Participants were eight of the nine ACOLOP members ( Angola , Brazil , Guinea-Bissau , Cape Verde , Macau / China, Mozambique , East Timor , Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe ) and the two associated ACOLOP members (hosts India and Sri Lanka ). Equatorial Guinea did not participate.

In the 2014 Games, competitions in 9 different sports were held. New here was Wushu , which had the most medals to be awarded with 30 competitions. India and Macau dominated the Wushu competitions.

Prehistory of the Games

In 2009, in addition to Brazil and Sri Lanka, Goa also applied to host the 2014 Games, and its project was ultimately awarded the contract. Due to political changes in Goa, however, the following construction work was delayed and the agreed infrastructures threatened not to be completed on time. At the General Assembly of ACOLOP in March 2012, the new Minister of Sports, Goas, then assured that special efforts would now be made and the games to be played on schedule. At the general assembly of ACOLOP in September 2013, the Indian organizers presented the assembly with a report on the measures. A few buildings were still nearing completion, and the assembly had to decide to postpone the games to January 2014.

Brazil, which traditionally has the strongest team at the Games, did not send any athletes to Goa to protest against the non-compliance with the agreements. Only seven Brazilian wushu athletes competed there without the support of the Brazilian Olympic Committee . Portugal also only sent a weak team. It was also criticized that the Portuguese language did not play a significant role in the official communication of the Games. English , Konkani and Hindi were used in the public presentation and at the opening ceremony , and only sporadically a few Portuguese set pieces. The official website during the games was also largely in English.
