Associação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa
The Associação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa ( German : "Association of the Olympic Committees of Portuguese Official Language"), ACOLOP for short , is the association of the National Olympic Committees (NOK) of the Portuguese-speaking countries and regions.
Seat
The ACOLOP is based near the Macau Olympic Complex in Rua do Desporto 185–195, in the Taipa district, a former island of the Chinese special administrative region of Macau . Macau was a Portuguese colony from 1516 to 1999 and continues to be shaped by Portuguese in terms of architecture and administration.
history
The long-standing idea of intensifying the cooperation between the lusophone countries in sport took shape for the first time with a conference in Athens in February 2004 when a working group there established an Associação dos Comités Nacionais Olímpicos Lusófonos (German: “Association of lusofonen National Olympic Committee ”) decided. This association of the Olympic Committees of the Portuguese-speaking area should, in addition to sport and the Olympic idea, especially promote friendly relations between the Portuguese-speaking parts of the world.
ACOLOP was founded on June 8, 2004 in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon , by Portugal, Brazil, the five African PALOP states, and Equatorial Guinea as an associate member. It was founded as a non-governmental organization of the NOK of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries with the aim of strengthening the cooperation and unity of its members through sport.
activities
In 2006, ACOLOP organized the community games, the Jogos da Lusofonia, for the first time as its most effective public activity . The 2006 Games in Macau were followed by the 2009 Games in Lisbon and the 2014 Games in Goa , India , which was part of Portuguese India until 1961 . The 2017 Games will take place in the Mozambican capital, Maputo .
In keeping with its guiding principle of spreading the Olympic ideals and promoting cooperation among its members, the ACOLOP is also developing other initiatives. It is active in the training and further education of coaches and athletes, organizes training camps, and maintains an aid program for its weaker members with the Programa de Solidariedade Olímpica (Portuguese for: program of Olympic solidarity). The program is supported by the Committee for Olympic Solidarity , an organization of the International Olympic Committee founded in 1971 to support young and weaker NOCs.
