history

Angola was part of the Portuguese colonial empire until it became independent in 1975. The COA was founded on February 17, 1979. In October of that year there was first provisional, then in 1980 official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

For the first time, the COA organized Angola's Olympic participation in the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow , which were boycotted by the USA and a number of Western countries . After Angola, like most socialist people 's republics , boycotted the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the country took part in all subsequent summer games. There the COA is still aiming for its first medal win. So far, the country has not sent any athletes to the Winter Games (as of 2014).

In 2004 the COA was one of the founding members of ACOLOP , the "Association of Portuguese-Language Olympic Committees". Since then, the country has participated in all Jogos da Lusofonia , the games organized by the ACOLOP for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries . At the first games in 2006 in Macau , which is now back in China , Angola won three silver and two bronze medals. At the 2009 games in Lisbon , the country managed to win four gold, one silver and nine bronze medals. The country was also successful at the 2014 Games in Goa , where it won five gold, eight silver and 14 bronze medals.
