Olympic history of Angola

The umbrella organization of the Olympic movement in Angola is the Comité Olímpico Angolano (COA). The COA was founded in 1979 and recognized a year later by the International Olympic Committee during its 82nd session in Lake Placid .
Angola took part in the Summer Olympics for the first time the same year it was accepted into the Olympic family in Moscow . Four years later, the country closed like most socialist countries the boycott of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in. Since then it has regularly participated in the summer games. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games.
So far no medal could be won. Angola is thus the seventh largest state in terms of population without Olympic medalists.
1980 to 1996
The games of 1980 in Moscow for the first time Angolan athletes went to the start. The boxers José Luís de Almeida, Abílio Cabral and Alberto Coelho as well as the swimmer Jorge Lima, all of whom competed on July 20, 1980, were Angola's first Olympians. The first female Olympian was the swimmer Michele Pessoa on the same day.
In 1984 , Angola followed the call to boycott the socialist countries and stayed away from the Los Angeles games. In 1988 in Seoul judoka from Angola took part for the first time. In 1992 in Barcelona sailors competed for the first time. Angola also took part in an Olympic basketball tournament here for the first time.
In 1996 in Atlanta , the women's handball team, which took part for the first time, came seventh. For the first time, marksmen also took part.
2000 until today
Also in Sydney in 2000 and in Athens in 2004 the participants were unsuccessful. Beach volleyball players and canoeists from Angola competed for the first time in Beijing in 2008 . In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , the women's handball team reached the quarter-finals. Here the women were eliminated with 27:31 against Russia. Angolan rowers took part for the first time in Rio.
