Albania first sent athletes to the Summer Olympics in 1972. A 20 year hiatus followed. It was not until 1992 that the Komiteti Olimpik Kombëtar Shqiptar , which had been founded in 1958, sent athletes to the Olympic Games again. So far, no Albanian participant has been able to win a medal at the Olympic Games. Young athletes took part in the two youth summer games held so far.

Overview

Summer games

The first Olympic team in Albania consisted of marksmen and weightlifters. The first Olympians in the country were the marksmen Fatos Pilkati and Afërdita Tusha on August 27, 1972 . Albanian athletes took part in the following summer games in athletics and swimming (from 1992), cycling and wrestling (from 1996) and judo (from 2008).

In 1996 the athlete Mirela Manjani took part in the javelin throw. From 1997 she started for Greece, she had married a Greek weightlifter. She won silver in 2000 and bronze in 2004. The weightlifter Ilirjan Suli achieved a first success for Albania in 2000 in Sydney . He reached fifth place in the middleweight division. In 2008 Romela Begaj reached 6th place in the lightweight category. Briken Calja was fifth in the lightweight category in 2016.

Winter games

Albanian winter sports enthusiasts have so far only competed in alpine skiing. The first winter Olympic athlete in Albania was Erjon Tola on February 18, 2006 . The first Albanian woman to appear at the Winter Games was Suela Mëhilli on February 18, 2018.

Youth games

Four young athletes, two boys and two girls, competed in the first edition of the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . They competed in athletics, judo, rowing and swimming.

In 2014 in Nanjing , five athletes, three boys and two girls, took part. They competed in athletics as well as cycling and swimming.
