Poland , whose NOK , Polski Komitet Olimpijski was founded in 1918 andrecognizedby the IOC one year later in 1919, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1924. Since 1924 athletes have also been sent to the winter games.

Poland has not yet hosted the summer or winter Olympics itself.

A total of 3699 athletes, 704 of them women, competed. Athletes from Poland have so far won 219 medals, 271 of them at summer and 20 at winter games. The most successful athlete is the track and field athlete Irena Szewińska , who won seven medals between 1964 and 1980, including three golds. The first medal winner was the rider Adam Królikiewicz , who won bronze once at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The most successful sport is athletics in summer with 23 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronze medals and ski jumping in winter with three gold, three silver and one bronze medals. Poland achieved the best placement in the medal table in 1976 in Montreal with sixth place.

The youngest member of a team from Poland in 1980 was gymnast Anita Jokiel , who started at the age of 13. The marksman Józef Kiszkurno was the oldest participant in Polish Olympic history at the age of 57 in 1952.
