The first Olympic team in Haiti consisted of two fencers in Paris in 1900. The first Olympian in Haiti was the foil fencer André Corvington on May 14, 1900. The Haiti-born rugby player Constantin Henriquez studied medicine in Paris. As a rugby player, he was French champion twice. In Paris he took part in the rugby tournament for the team of the Union des sociétés françaises de sports athlétiques and was Olympic champion with the French team. Henriquez became Haiti's first Olympic and medalist, but he won the medal for France. Henriquez is also considered to be the first dark-skinned Olympic champion in history.

Haiti did not participate in the Olympic Games again until 24 years later, again in Paris. This time the team consisted of marksmen and athletes. Haiti won the first medal in Paris. The shooting team with the free rifle won the bronze medal on June 27, 1924. The Haitian shooters also dominated the individual competition. Four of their five team members came under the top 15. Ludovic Augustin was fifth, Ludovic Valborge sixth, Destin Destine tenth and Astrel Rolland 13th. In 1928 in Amsterdam, Silvio Cator won silver in the long jump and thus the first medal of a Haitian individual athlete. In 1932 Cator finished the long jump competition in 9th place. The composer Alphonse Henriquez submitted one of his works to the Olympic art competitions , but was unable to place.

Weightlifter Rene Ambroise was to take part in the 1936 Summer Olympics. He also arrived at the Olympic site, but injured himself during training and therefore could not start the competition.

Haiti did not send any teams to the following Summer Games in 1948, 1952 and 1956. In 1960 a weight lifter started. No Haitian athletes were posted in 1964 and 1968 either. 1972 in Munich, sprinter Mireille Joseph became the first woman from Haiti to take part in the Olympic Games. In Montreal 1976 boxers from Haiti took part for the first time. Haiti followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.

In 1988 in Seoul a tennis player from Haiti took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time, Haitian judoka for the first time in 1992, and a swimmer in 1996. In 2000 in Sydney a track and field athlete was able to qualify for a final. Dudley Dorival finished seventh over the 110 meter hurdles. A Haitian Taekwondoin was used for the first time in Athens in 2004. In 2012 in London, the triple jumper Samyr Lainé reached the final and was eleventh. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, a Haitian wrestler competed for the first time.
