The Turkey , the NOK , the Türkiye Milli Olimpiyat Komitesi , founded in 1908 and 1911 by the IOC recognized was already taking 1906 Summer Olympics in part. Since 1936 athletes have also been sent to the winter games. Young athletes have taken part in all the Youth Olympic Games that have been held so far, both in summer and in winter.

General

Turkey has been represented at the Summer Olympics since 1912. She wasn't there only three times. In 1920 the Turkish NOK was not invited, as Turkey, like Germany, Austria, Hungary and Bulgaria, was considered to be the trigger for the First World War . In 1932 they did not participate because of the high travel costs to the USA. In 1980 Turkey joined the US-initiated boycott of the Moscow Games.

The strength of the Turkish Olympic teams varied greatly. Since 1924 the number of athletes has consistently been in the double-digit range. In 2012, more than 100 athletes started for the first time. With 112 players, the London Olympic team was the largest to date.

By far the most successful Olympic sport in Turkey is wrestling. So far 63 medals have been won in both styles. Turkey presented the Olympic champion 29 times, plus 18 silver and 16 bronze medals. In second place with eleven medals, eight of which are gold, is weightlifting.

However, the most successful athletes in Turkey are weight lifters. Naim Süleymanoğlu was Olympic featherweight champion in 1988, 1992 and 1996. Halil Mutlu also achieved three Olympic victories . In 1996 he won the flyweight division, 2000 and 2004 the bantamweight division. Freestyle wrestler Hamit Kaplan was also able to win three medals with a gold, a silver and a bronze medal. The heavyweight won in 1956, finished second in 1960 and third in 1964.

Application to host the Olympic Games

The Turkish city of Istanbul applied five times to host the Summer Olympic Games. The application to host the 27th Summer Olympics in 2000 failed in the first ballot at the 101st IOC session in 1993 in Monte Carlo . With just seven votes, they were the first of five applicants to be eliminated. The application to host the 28th 2004 Summer Olympics was not accepted by the IOC.

At the 112th IOC session in 2001 in Moscow , the decision to host the 29th Summer Olympics in 2008 was made. In the first ballot, Istanbul remained in the running with 17 votes. In the second ballot, Beijing received the absolute majority required, so that no further ballot was necessary. Istanbul's application to host the 30th Summer Olympic Games in 2012 was not accepted by the IOC.

The 125th IOC session in 2013 in Buenos Aires was about the allocation of the 32nd Summer Olympics in 2020. In the first ballot, Istanbul was tied with Madrid (26 points). A runoff election had to bring about the decision which of the two cities came in the second ballot against Tokyo . Istanbul won the runoff by 49:45. The second ballot was then lost against Tokyo with 36:60.

Overview

Summer games

1908 to 1956

Aleko Mulos was registered for the gymnastics competitions at the Summer Games. However, he does not appear in any results list, so it is debatable whether Mulos even took part.

In freestyle wrestling, Adem Bereket won a welterweight bronze medal. The Taekwondoin Hamide Tosun also won bronze in the featherweight division. In 2004 in Athens, weightlifters were all Olympic champions. Halil Mutlu became Olympic bantamweight champion for the third time in a row, Sedat Artuç took bronze. Taner Sağır won the middleweight division . Reyhan Arabacıoğlu was subsequently awarded the bronze medal, as the original third place, the Russian Oleg Perepetschonow, was disqualified for doping. The third gold medal was won by Nurcan Taylan in the flyweight division, making her the first woman from Turkey to become an Olympic champion. In freestyle, Aydın Polatçı fought for a bronze medal in the heavyweight division. In athletics, hammer thrower Eşref Apak was awarded the bronze medal. Previously, the Hungarian Adrián Annus , the original winner, had been disqualified. The Turkish federation had meanwhile also started to allow foreign athletes to be naturalized in order to then have them compete in international competitions for Turkey. Examples in the past are weightlifters Naim Süleymanoğlu and Halil Mutlu, both born Bulgarians. Now athletes from East Africa were also recruited. In Athens, the native Ethiopian Elvan Albeylegesse reached the final over 1500 meters and finished eighth.

2008 in Beijing freestyle wrestler Ramazan Şahin was Olympic welterweight champion. His teammate Nazmi Avluca had won bronze in the Greco-Roman style light heavyweight division. In Taekwondo, Azize Tanrıkulu won silver and Servet Tazegül bronze both in featherweight. The boxer Yakup Kılıç won a bronze medal in the featherweight division. Weightlifter Sibel Özkan had to return her silver flyweight medal after she was convicted of doping and disqualified. The athlete Elvan Albeylegesse won silver over 5000 meters, her teammate Alemitu Bekele , also a native of Ethiopia, came in seventh. Albeylegesse also took silver over 10,000 meters. However, both medals were revoked after she was subsequently convicted of doping and disqualified in 2017.

The 2012 London Games were overshadowed by two doping cases in athletics from a Turkish perspective. In the final of the 1,500 meter run there was a surprising double victory for Turkish runners. Aslı Çakır Alptekin won the race ahead of Gamze Bulut . In 2015 Alptekin was convicted of doping and disqualified, Bulut then became the new Olympic champion. In 2016, her biological passport showed irregularities, Bulut was banned and also disqualified. The Turkish team only had three medals left. Taekwondoin Servet Tazegül became Olympic featherweight champion. Nur Tatar took silver in the women's welterweight division . The wrestler Rıza Kayaalp won bronze in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division. Male middle and long distance runners were able to book three finals. In the women’s category, Nurdan Karagöz took fifth place in the flyweight category. In the middleweight division, Sibel Şimşek was subsequently disqualified. Şimşek, originally fourth, had meanwhile been awarded the bronze medal after the winner Maija Manesa from Kazakhstan was disqualified.

In Rio de Janeiro 2016, Turkish athletes won eight medals, five of them in wrestling. A full set of medals went to the freestyle wrestlers. Olympic champion was Taha Akgül in the super heavyweight division, Selim Yaşar won silver in the middleweight division and Soner Demirtaş won bronze in the welterweight division. Two medals were won in the Greco-Roman style. Rıza Kayaalp won silver in super heavyweight, Cenk İldem bronze in light heavyweight. In weightlifting, Daniyar Ismaiyilov won silver in the lightweight.
