Ahmet Ak

Ahmet Ak (born May 20, 1966 in Kahramanmaraş ) is a former Turkish wrestler . He was European champion in 1989 in free style bantamweight.

Career

Ahmet Ak started wrestling as a teenager and became a member of the TEK Kahramanmaraş sports club . He was trained by Avni Tarhan. The 1.63 meter tall athlete wrestled exclusively in free style. He weighed around 60 kg and started bantamweight throughout his career (up to 57 kg body weight at that time).

He was already very successful as a junior and won several medals at international junior championships. In 1981 and 1983 he took 2nd place at the Balkan Junior Championships in Pula and Bucharest, respectively. In 1984 he was at the Junior European Championships in Slaghaven / Denmark in bantamweight behind Rumen Pawlow , Bulgaria and Karsten Polky , GDR in 3rd place and in 1985 at the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Colorado Springs in bantamweight behind Ewgeni Musojan from the Soviet Union 2nd place.

In 1985 he started in Leipzig for the first time at an international senior championship. He came in bantamweight with three wins and losses against Bernd Bobrich from the GDR and Gurgen Bagdasarjan from the USSR on the 4th place. His next start was at the 1987 European Championships in Veliko Tarnovo . Here he reached the 5th place. He won his first medal at an international senior championship in 1987 at the World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand . He won here behind Sergei Beloglasow from the Soviet Union and Barry Davis from the United States the bronze medal in the bantamweight.

In 1988, Ahmet Ak became Vice European Champion in Manchester . In the final he was defeated by Sergei Beloglasow, who was then unbeatable in this weight class. At the Olympic Games this year in Seoul , he finished second in his pool behind the same wrestler and therefore had the opportunity to fight for the bronze medal against the South Korean Kyung Sun-noh. In the cauldron of Seoul he had no chance against the local Kyung and lost on points. He finished 4th.

His big moment came in 1989 when he became European bantamweight champion in Ankara . In the final, he came to a narrow point victory over the Soviet athlete Kamadulin Abduldaikow. At the world championship this year in Martigny / Switzerland he lost again to a South Korean wrestler and only came in 5th place. In the fight for this place he beat the Mongols Arslangiin Tsedensodnom with 2: 1 techn. Points defeated.

Ahmet Ak last started in 1990 at international championships. At the European Championships in Poznan he came in 5th place and at the World Championships in Tokyo he won no medal with 4th place. In the battle for 3rd place, he had to admit defeat to the Soviet athlete Sergei Smal on points.

He then ended his international wrestling career because he went to Germany and spent several years there in the German Bundesliga, a. a. for KSV Wiesental , ranked. Ahmet Ak, who graduated from Cukurova University with a degree in sports, returned to Turkey . He became a coach in Kahramanmaraş and later coach of the Turkish national freestyle team. Now (2009) he is the vice-chairman of the Turkish Wrestling Association.
