Career
The blond Belarusian Sjarhej Smal started wrestling in 1978. He started for Dynamo Homel and was trained by Stanislaw Gorla and Alexander Nikolajewitsch Smal. At the beginning of his career he started for the Soviet Union, after the collapse of the Soviet Union for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and from 1993 for Belarus . He only wrestled in free style and began his international bantamweight career, moving to featherweight in 1994.
In 1990 he took the lead in free style bantamweights in the Soviet Union and was nominated for the Tokyo World Cup . He finished there in 3rd place after losing to Cuban Alejandro Puerto Díaz in his pool final . He won the fight for 3rd place against Ahmet Ak from Turkey .
In 1991 he started again for the Soviet Union at the World Cup in Varna. He was probably at the peak of his performance this year and became world champion in bantamweight with four wins in Varna. However, his win in the first game over the Mongols Tserenbaataryn Tsogtbajar (7: 6 technical points) was close .
Sjarhej Smal started for the CIS at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In the bantamweight he fought his way up to the final, in which he met his final opponent from the 1990 World Cup, Alejandro Puerto Díaz. He also proved to be stronger than him in the Olympic final and became Olympic champion with a point victory. Sjarhej Smal won the silver medal.
Also in 1993 and 1994 and 1995 Sjarhej Smal was very successful, even if he did not win any more titles. In 1993 he was in Istanbul runner-up European bantamweight champion, where he was in the final against the Turkish Remzi Musaoğlu with 2: 5 techn. Was subject to points. In 1994, again in Istanbul, he became vice world champion. He started in featherweight. In the final he was defeated by Magomed Asisow from Russia . At this event he came in a pool fight to a narrow 8: 6 point victory over the Goldbacher Jürgen Scheibe . In 1995 Sjarhej Smal won a bronze medal at the European Featherweight Championships in Budapest . He lost to Magomed Asisow in the final of his pool and thus only had the opportunity to fight for 3rd place. He won this fight against Martin Müller from Switzerland . At the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta , Sjarhej Smal was 7th without a medal.
In 1996 Sjarhej Smal came back to 3rd place at the European Featherweight Championships in Budapest . He won the fight for this media over Elbrus Tedejew , an Ossetian starting for the Ukraine , who was to develop into one of the most successful featherweight freestyle wrestlers in the world. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he won a. a. over Jürgen Scheibe on points (8: 1), but lost to the American Thomas Brands and the Japanese Takahira Wada and only finished 11th.
In the following years up to 2001, very good results alternated with mediocre results. In 1997 he came to B. at the World Championships in Krasnoyarsk in 4th place, where he was defeated by the Americans Cary J. Kolat and Magomed Asisow, but could again defeat Elbrus Tedejew. In 1998 he became vice European champion in Bratislava after a defeat in the final against the exceptional Bulgarian and also in Germany well-known Serafim Barzakow . Against Barzakow and the South Korean Jang Jae-sung, Sergej Smal was also defeated at the 1998 World Cup in Tehran and only came in 9th place. He managed to win a medal again at the European Championships in Budapest in 2000. He only had to admit defeat to the Russian Murad Umachanow on points (1: 5).
With a total of nine medals won at the Olympic Games, World and At the European Championships, Sergei Smal was one of the most successful wrestlers of the 1990s and early 2000s in his weight classes. In 2002 he resigned from international competition. He is now working as a trainer in Belarus. After his resignation, he wrestled for several years for the German club TSV Burgebrach , where there were family ties, in the Bavarian league.
