Rumen Pavlov

Rumen Pavlov (born August 21, 1964 in Sliven ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . In 1990 he was European champion and vice- world champion in free style in bantamweight.

Career

Rumen Pavlov began wrestling at Spartak Varna as a teenager . In the course of his career he also competed for Etyr Veliko Tarnovo and Slavia Liteks Sofia . The coach who mainly looked after him was Alexander Petkow. Rumen Pavlov wrestled exclusively in free style and always in the bantamweight, the weight class up to 57 kg body weight.

In 1983 he came to his first international assignments. He was in Slagharen / Netherlands Junior European Champion (Espoirs) ahead of Karsten Polky from the GDR and Ahmet Ak from Turkey . At the Junior World Championship (Espoirs) in Los Angeles that same year , he finished second behind the Czechoslovak Josef Schwendtner and ahead of the South Korean Kim Yeun-mon.

After these successes in the junior division, Rumen Pavlov found it difficult to achieve similar successes with the seniors. This was primarily due to the fact that there were several world class wrestlers in every weight class and every style in Bulgaria . For this reason, Rumen Pavlov had to fight his place in the Bulgarian senior team against his competitors Stefan Ivanov , Georgi Kaltschew , Valentin Savov , Alben Kumbarov and Emil Ivanov .

Rumen Pavlov therefore came to his next assignment at an international championship in 1989. He finished 4th in the bantamweight championship in Ankara . In the fight for 3rd place he was defeated by Jürgen Scheibe from Germany 1: 2 techn. Points. In the same year he started even at the World Cup in Martigny / Switzerland , where she won behind Kim Jong-sik, South Korea and Askari Mohammadian from Iran with the bronze medal .

1990 turned out to be the most successful year in Rumen Pavlov's career. He became European bantamweight champion in Poznan with a victory in the final over Laszlo Miklosch from Germany (6: 4 technical points) . At the World Cup this year in Rome he fought his way to the final, in which he was defeated by the Cuban Alejandro Puerto on points.

In 1991 he only started at the World Cup, which took place in Varna . Ironically in front of his Bulgarian audience, Rumen Pavlov retired from this World Cup with two defeats after the second round and only finished 15th. Despite this mishap, he was also used in the international championships in 1992, which was a rarity in Bulgaria at the time. But he justified this commitment at least at the European Championships in Kaposvár , where he finished 2nd behind Bagautdin Umachanow from Russia and in front of Remzi Musaoğlu from Turkey . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he reached 3rd place in his pool and therefore fought against the American Kendall Cross for 5th place overall. He won this fight and finished 5th.

Participation in the Olympic Games was the last start of Rumen Pavlov in an international championship.
