At the European Championships in Łódź in 1981 , Bobrich celebrated his first major success by winning the Vice European Champion title. He needed four wins and lost only to the Bulgarian Stefan Ivanov . At the World Championships in Skopje in the same year he came 4th in his pool and 9th overall.
