The Netherlands Antilles first took part in the Summer Olympic Games in 1952 . In 1988 and 1992 the nation was also represented at the Winter Olympics. In 2010 the country was dissolved in the Kingdom of the Netherlands . The National Olympic Committee was the Nederlands Antilliaans Olympic Comité . It was founded in 1931, recognized by the IOC in 1950 and also dissolved in 2010. The official abbreviation changed over the years: when it was first entered in 1952 it was AHO , in 1960 it was ATO , in 1964 NAN . In 1968 they returned to AHO , this abbreviation remained until the end.
Overview
In 1952 the Netherlands Antilles, since 1948 a colony of the Netherlands and converted into a country in 1954, took part in the Summer Olympics with a soccer team for the first time. On July 21, the team played in the first round of the tournament in Lahti against Turkey , the game was lost 1: 2 and the team was eliminated.
In 1956 the Netherlands Antilles, like the Netherlands, joined the Olympic boycott due to the invasion of Hungary by the Soviet Union . The 1980 Games in Moscow were boycotted, otherwise the island nation was represented at all summer games.
In 1960 the nation was again represented by five athletes, all of whom competed in weightlifting. Fencing was added in 1964, and women competed there for the first time in 1968. In 1972 a marksman entered the race for the first time, in 1976 judo and athletics were added, in 1984 swimming and synchronized swimming and in 1988 sailing. The windsurfer Jan Boersma was able to win the first Olympic medal for the Netherlands Antilles.
In 1986 the island of Aruba gained its independence, in 1988 the island competed for the first time under its own flag at the Olympic Games. In the same year the Netherlands Antilles participated in the Winter Olympics for the first time. Another participation followed in 1992, and the nation has not been represented since then.
In 2000, for the first time, horse riding and triathlon athletes entered the race for the Netherlands Antilles. In 2008, Churandy Martina was able to win a silver medal in the 200-meter run, which he was deprived of for crossing the lane markings.
On October 10, 2010, the country of the Netherlands Antilles was officially dissolved, after it had previously participated in the first Summer Youth Olympic Games and won a bronze medal. Curaçao and Sint Maarten became independent countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Bonaire , Saba and Sint Eustatius became special parishes of the Netherlands. At the 2012 Summer Games , athletes from these islands competed as independent Olympic participants, as the NOK has now also been dissolved. In 2016 some athletes competed for Aruba or the Netherlands.
