Burundi , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique du Burundi , was founded in 1990 andrecognizedby the IOC in1993, has been taking part in the Summer Olympic Games since 1996. No athletes from Landes have taken part in the winter games.

Overview

The first Burundian Olympians were the two 800-meter runners Arthémon Hatungimana and Charles Nkazamyampi on July 28, 1996 , who took part in the Atlanta Games. In Atlanta, Justine Nahimana, a 10,000-meter runner, was the first Burundian female athlete to start. The very first time they participated, they won their first medal, which was also their first Olympic victory. Vénuste Niyongabo won the 5000 meter run on August 3, 1996.

Also at the Sydney 2000 Games only athletes took part. Aloÿs Nizigama , who was ninth over 10,000 m, made the only final appearance . In 2004 in Athens Burundian swimmers took part for the first time.

In Beijing 2008 , the Burundian team was unsuccessful. In London 2012 , a Burundian judoka took part for the first time. Francine Niyonsaba managed to take part in the final in the 800-meter run, in which she was seventh.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , the Burundian team reached three finals in athletics. In the 10,000 m, Olivier Irabaruta finished 27th. In the women, Diane Nukuri came 13th in the 10,000 m. Francine Niyonsaba won the second Olympic medal in her country in the 800-meter run with silver.

IOC members

Burundi provides a member of the IOC. In 2009 Lydia Nsekera , President of the Burundian Football Association from 2004 to 2013, was elected an IOC member.
