The United States , whose NOK , the United States Olympic Committee , was founded in 1894 and recognized by the IOC in the year the IOC was founded, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1896. Since 1924 athletes have also been sent to the winter games. The United States has been the most successful nation 16 times in summer and once in winter. This also makes them the most successful sports nation at the Olympic Games.

The United States has hosted the Olympic Games eight times. In 1904, 1932, 1960, 1984 and 1996 the Summer Games and in 1932, 1960, 2002 the Winter Games were held at different locations. Here was Lake Placid with 1932 and 1980, twice hosted the Winter Games.
A total of 9288 athletes, including 2,426 women, competed. Athletes from the United States have won 2,680 medals so far, including 2,390 at summer and 280 at winter games. The most successful athlete is the swimmer Michael Phelps , who won a total of 22 Olympic medals. The first medalist was Bob Garrett , who won a total of four medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics . The most successful sports are athletics in summer with 320 gold, 250 silver and 196 bronze medals and speed skating in winter with 29 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze medals. In 2010, a new all-time record was set with 37 total medals.
The youngest member of a team from the United States in 1928 was the water diver Dorothy Poynton-Hill , who started at the age of 13. In 1904, at the age of 71, archer Thomas Scott was the oldest competitor in US Olympic history.
