Newfoundland only participated in the Olympic Games once. However, there is controversy as to whether the only athlete who competed in St. Louis should be considered a Newfoundland or an American . Robert Fowler was born in Newfoundland in 1882 and his family emigrated to Boston in 1889. There Fowler went to school and college. As a marathon runner, he started several times in the Boston Marathon . However, he did not become a US citizen until September 16, 1907, so that, according to sports historians, he cannot be listed as a starter for the USA.
