Olympic history of Somalia

Somalia , whose NOK , the Guddiga Olimbikada Soomaaliyeed , was founded in 1959 andrecognizedby the IOC in 1972, first took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1976 and 1980 Somalia joined calls to boycott the Montreal and Moscow Games. In 1992 they did not participate in the civil war. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games. Medals have not yet been won.
Overview
Three athletes formed Somalia's first Olympic team at the 1972 Munich Games . The first Olympian in Somalia was Mohamed Aboker, who started in the 800-meter run on August 31, 1972. The country followed calls for boycotts from African countries and the USA and stayed away from the games in Montreal in 1976 and Moscow in 1980 .
1984 in Los Angeles Somalia returned to the Olympic stage. For the first time, participants were able to qualify for another round. Also in Seoul in 1988 the team consisted only of athletes. The civil war in Somalia prevented a Somali delegation from participating in Barcelona in 1992 .
In Atlanta 1996 , a Somali athlete reached a final for the first time. Abdi Bile finished 6th in the final race over 5000 meters. In 2000 in Sydney , the 400-meter runner Safia Abukar Hussein was the first Somali woman to take part in the Olympic Games. In each of the following summer games, only two athletes, one man and one woman, were sent. All were unsuccessful.
Somalia is one of the few countries that was only represented in one sport at the Olympic Games, in this case athletics.
