Twelve men competed in athletics and cycling, but were unsuccessful. 1960 in Rome the first medal win, at the same time the first Olympic victory, could be celebrated. The marathon runner Abebe Bikila won the gold medal. This was particularly noteworthy because he entered the competition barefoot.

Bikila was able to repeat his Olympic victory in Tokyo in 1964 , this time he ran with running shoes. He was the first Olympic marathon champion to defend his title. For the first time, Ethiopian boxers took part in the Olympic tournament. Also in 1968 in Mexico City , the Olympic marathon champion came from Ethiopia, this time Mamo Wolde won , who also won silver in the 10,000 meter run.

Two bronze medals were added in Munich in 1972 : Mamo Wolde in the marathon and Miruts Yifter over 10,000 meters.

1976 to 1988

In 1976 Ethiopia was one of 28 African countries that boycotted the Montreal Games. The reason was the tour of a New Zealand rugby union team through South Africa , which had broken the international sports ban against the apartheid regime.

In 1980 in Moscow , with Fantaye Sirak and Amsale Woldegibriel, Ethiopian women competed for the first time. Miruts Yifter became the first Ethiopian double Olympic champion with his victories over 5000 and 10,000 meters. Two bronze medals were added by Mohamed Kedir over 10,000 meters and Eshetu Tura over 3000 meters.

In 1984 the socialist countries called for a boycott for the Los Angeles Games . Also the Games in Seoul in 1988 stayed away from Ethiopia. They showed solidarity with North Korea for boycotting the games.
