Kyrgyzstan , whose NOK , the Kyrgys Respublikassynyn uluttuk olimpiada komiteti , was founded in 1991 andrecognizedby the IOC in1993, has participated in all Olympic Games, winter and summer games since 1994. This makes Kyrgyzstan one of the few countries whose Olympic debut took place at the Winter Games. Athletes from Kyrgyzstan competedfor the Soviet Olympic team from 1952 to 1988during the Soviet Union . In 1992, Kyrgyz athletes wereintegrated intothe CIS team. Young athletes have taken part in all of the youth games held so far in summer and winter.

Overview

Summer games

Kyrgyzstan first competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics as an independent state. The first Olympian was the wrestler Raatbek Sanatbajew on July 19, 1996, who was also the first man from Kyrgyzstan to participate in the Olympic Games. The first woman at the Summer Games on July 20, 1996 was the swimmer Victoria Polyayeva. In addition to the wrestlers and swimmers, athletes, boxers, judoka, marksmen, canoeists, cyclists and modern pentathletes also competed in the first team. At the following summer games, Kyrgyz athletes competed in fencing and weightlifting (from 2000), taekwondo (from 2008) and sailing (from 2012).

The first Kyrgyz medal was won in Sydney 2000. The judoka Aidyn Smaghulow won bronze in the extra light weight . Three more medals followed in Beijing in 2008. In Greco-Roman wrestling Kanatbek Begalijew won silver in welterweight. Ruslan Tümönbajew won bronze in the lightweight . In freestyle wrestling, the lightweight Basar Basargurujew was subsequently awarded the bronze medal after the original silver medalist Wassil Fedoryschyn was convicted of doping and disqualified.

At the following summer games in London and Rio de Janeiro, Kyrgyz athletes were unsuccessful.

Winter games

Kyrgyzstan's first appearance at the Olympic Games was at the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. The biathlete Jewgenija Roppel , the only athlete on the team in Lillehammer, was the first participant from Kyrgyzstan in the Olympic Games on February 18, 1994. At the following winter games, Kyrgyz athletes competed in ski jumping (from 2002), alpine skiing (from 2006) and cross-country skiing (from 2010). The first male winter athlete in the country was the biathlete Alexander Tropnikow on February 11, 1998 .

Youth games

Youth Summer Games

Eight young athletes, seven boys and one girl, took part in the first Youth Summer Games in Singapore in 2010 . They competed in boxing, canoeing, wrestling, swimming, modern pentathlon and judo. The wrestler Urmatbek Amatow was the youth Olympic champion in the middleweight division of the Greco-Roman style. His teammate Schadybek Sulaimanow won bronze in the lightweight. The judoka Bolot Toktogonow won bronze in the heavyweight division.

Seven teenagers, six boys and one girl, took part in the second Summer Youth Games held in Nanjing in 2014 . They competed in judo, weightlifting, canoeing, horse riding, modern pentathlon, and shooting. The judoka Rostislaw Daschkow won silver in the heavyweight division.

Youth Winter Games

A Kyrgyz cross-country skier took part in the 2012 Winter Youth Games in Innsbruck and a biathlete in Lillehammer in 2016 .
