The Olympic history of the young state of Kosovo , founded in 2008, is correspondingly short.

In 1992 the Olympic Committee of Kosovo was founded, which was recognized by the International Olympic Committee on December 9, 2014 . The Kosovo made his debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics .

Kosovar athletes competed for the Yugoslav team between the 1920 Summer Olympics and the 1992 Winter Olympics . At the 1960 Summer Olympics , the three Kosovar-born footballers Milutin Šoškić , Fahrudin Jusufi and Vladimir Durković took part in the Yugoslav team and won the gold medal. 1984 won Aziz Salihu first individual Kosovar athlete a bronze medal in boxing .

After the break-up of Yugoslavia , the Olympic Committee of Kosovo was founded in 1992 as part of a struggle for independence . However, Kosovar athletes of Serbian ethnicity participated for Serbia and Montenegro and Serbia . On 17 February 2008, the proclaimed parliament , the independence of Kosovo. The judoka Majlinda Kelmendi qualified in 2012 for the Olympics and wanted to compete for Kosovo. Because of opposition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations , she was not allowed to represent Kosovo at the 2012 Olympic Games ; instead she competed for Albania . The Olympic Committee of Serbia invited all Kosovar athletes to participate for Serbia.

Kosovo became a provisional member of the IOC in October 2014, before becoming a full member in December. To date, Kosovo is not yet a member of the United Nations , but had diplomatic relations with 108 of the 193 members .

After being accepted into the IOC, Kosovo was able to take part in the games in Rio de Janeiro in summer 2016 . There were eight athletes on, Kelmendi carried the flag of Kosovo during the opening ceremony . On the third day of the Games, she managed to win the first gold medal for Kosovo.

At the Olympic Winter Games 2018 in Korea Pyeongchang took Albin Tahiri part as the only Kosovar athletes. He is the first athlete to represent his country at the Winter Games.
