The Philippines , whose NOK , the Philippine Olympic Committee , was founded in 1911 and recognized by the IOC in 1929 , has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1924. In 1980 the call to boycott the Moscow Games was followed. Filipino winter sports enthusiasts have been taking part in winter games on an irregular basis since 1972. Young athletes took part in both of the youth summer games held so far and in the first youth winter games.

The first Olympic team in the Philippines consisted of a track and field athlete. Sprinter David Nepomuceno was the first Olympian in the Philippines on July 6, 1924. The first woman in the country was the hurdler Manolita Cinco on November 27, 1956.

In addition to track and field athletes, Filipino swimmers (from 1928), boxers (from 1932), wrestlers, marksmen and basketball players (from 1936), weightlifters (from 1948), sailors (from 1960), judoka, cyclists and gymnasts (from 1964 ), Archers (from 1972), fencers and rowers (from 1988), riders (from 1992), badminton players (from 1996), taekwondo and diver (from 2000) as well as golfers and table tennis players (from 2016).

The swimmer Teófilo Yldefonso became the first Filipino medalist in 1928. Over 200 meters chest he won the bronze medal. Four years later in Los Angeles he was able to repeat his success. His teammate Jikirum Adjaluddin was fifth. The athlete Simeon Toribio also won a medal. He won bronze in the high jump. The boxer José Luis Villanueva won another bronze medal in the bantamweight division.

In Berlin in 1936, the athlete Miguel White won bronze over the 400 meter hurdles. Teófilo Yldefonso achieved 7th place over 200 meters chest. The marksman Martin Gison took 4th place in the prone position with the small bore rifle. The basketball team failed only in the quarterfinals against the USA. After two victories in the placement round, the team finished fifth.

In 1948 the basketball team was rated fifth in the group only because of the poorer basket difference. To reach the quarter-finals, 47 baskets were missing. In the placement round, the team reached 12th place. Weightlifter Rodrigo del Rosario reached 5th place in the featherweight division. In 1952, he improved to 4th place. His teammate Pedro Landero was sixth in the bantamweight division. The basketball team finished ninth. In 1956 the team was able to qualify again for the quarterfinals, but could not prevail there. After the placement round, the team finished seventh.

After a 28-year break, a medal was celebrated again in Tokyo in 1964. Boxer Anthony Villanueva won silver in featherweight. In 1972 the basketball team met the team of the Federal Republic of Germany in the preliminary round and lost 74:93. It wasn't until 1988 in Seoul that there was another success. The boxer Leopoldo Serantes won bronze in the light flyweight division. In 1992, Roel Velasco followed in the same weight class, also with bronze. Roel's brother Mansueto Velasco also fought light flyweight in 1996 and won silver.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, a Filipino woman was able to win a medal for the first time. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won silver at featherweight.

Winter games

In 1972 the Philippines were represented at the Winter Olympics for the first time. On February 9, 1972, the ski racers Ben Nanasca and Juan Cipriano were the first winter Olympians in their country to start. In 1988, when the Philippines took part for the second time, a Filipino toboggan run for the first time. In 1992 it was an alpine ski racer again and in 2014 a figure skater who represented the Philippines. In 2018, an alpine ski racer and a figure skater started.

Art competitions

Filipino artists participated in the 1948 Olympic Art Competitions . The painter Hernando Ocampo submitted the gouache Rebound , the sculptor Graciano Nepomuceno the woodwork Sipa Player . Both could not place themselves.

Youth games

At the first Youth Summer Games in Singapore in 2010 , nine teenagers, seven boys and two girls, competed in basketball, weightlifting, swimming, taekwondo and tennis. In 2014 in Nanjing , two boys and five girls participated in swimming, shooting, archery, triathlon, gymnastics and athletics. There was an Olympic victory, which is not included in the medal balance of the Philippines. The archer Luis Gabriel Moreno and the Chinese Li Jiaman became Olympic champion in the evaluation for mixed teams.

Filipino youngsters also took part in the first staging of the 2012 Winter Youth Games in Innsbruck . Two boys competed in alpine skiing and figure skating. Figure skater Michael Christian Martinez took 7th place. Participation in the 2016 Winter Youth Games in Lillehammer was not included.

IOC member

Former show jumper Mikaela Cojuangco-Jaworski has been a member of the IOC since 2013 . She is a member of the Commissions for Communication, Olympic Education and the Olympic Channel , the IOC's TV broadcaster. From 1985 to 2013 the entrepreneur Francisco Elizalde was an IOC member. His membership ended for reasons of age and has been an honorary member ever since.
