Serbia and Montenegro as well as the autonomous province of Kosovo belonged to Yugoslavia for a long time . Athletes from these republics therefore took part in the Olympic Games for Yugoslavia. The state fell apart in the early 1990s: Slovenia , Croatia , Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Macedonia became independent.

Yugoslavia was allowed to take part in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , but then fell under the sanctions of the United Nations . As a result, Yugoslavia was excluded from the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . In the former games, however, individual athletes were allowed to compete as independent Olympic participants .

From the 1996 Summer Olympics onwards, the country was allowed to run under its flag again, now as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . In 2003 this was converted into the new nation Serbia and Montenegro, under this name the nation competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . Montenegro gained independence through a referendum in 2006 . Since then, Montenegro and Serbia have competed in the Olympic Games as independent states. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Kosovo also competed as a separate nation for the first time, although the independence from Serbia, declared in 2008, was not recognized everywhere .
