Botswana , whose NOK , the Botswana National Olympic Committee , was founded in 1978 andrecognizedby the IOC in 1980, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1980. No athletes from Landes have taken part in the winter games.
1980s
1980 in Moscow for the first time athletes from Botswana competed at the Olympic Games. The seven-man team consisted only of track and field athletes. The first Olympians were Lucien Josiah in the 100-meter run, Langa Mudongo over 800 m, Golekane Mosveu over 10,000 m and Wilfred Kareng in the 400-meter hurdles.
A sailor was used for the first time in Los Angeles in 1984 , and a boxer for the first time in Seoul in 1988 .
1992 until today
In the following Olympic Games until 2000, other athletes and boxers participated unsuccessfully. Outstanding was the seventh place in the final of the 800-meter run of the middle-distance runner Glody Dube in Sydney in 2000 . The first woman from Botswana competed in Athens in 2004 . The first female Olympian in Botswana was the 400 meter runner Amantle Montsho on August 21, 2004 .
2008 in Beijing there were two finals in athletics. Amantle Montsho was eighth over 400 m, the long jumper Gable Garenamotse reached rank 9. The boxer Khumiso Ikgobpoleng was fifth in the bantamweight division. In addition, swimmers from Botswana were used for the first time.
The 2012 London Games turned out to be the most successful Olympic Games for Botswana to date. After Amantle Montsho reached fourth place in the 400 m final, Nijel Amos won the first Olympic medal for his country in the 800-meter run with silver.
At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games , the 400-meter runner Karabo Sibanda reached fifth place in the final. The same ranking was achieved by the men's 400-meter relay. A judoka from Botswana took part for the first time in Rio.
