Paraguay , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Paraguayo , was founded in 1970, has been sending athletes to the Summer Olympics since 1968. Up to 1980 Paraguay took part in all subsequent summer games. However, Paraguayan athletes took part in the winter games for the first time in 2014. Young athletes took part in both of the youth summer games that have been organized so far.
Overview
Summer games
The fencer Rodolfo de la Ponte was the first Paraguayan Olympian on October 15, 1968 in Mexico City. The first women in Paraguay at the Olympic Games were tennis players Rossana de los Ríos and Larissa Schaerer in women's doubles on July 30, 1992 in Barcelona .
Paraguay followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.
Since Paraguay's participation began, the country's athletes have competed in fencing (since 1968), athletics and shooting (since 1972), swimming (since 1976), judo and boxing (since 1984), tennis (since 1988), in football (since 1992), sailing (since 1996), rowing (since 2004), table tennis (since 2008) and golf (since 2016).
Paraguay's soccer teams have been the most successful so far. In 1992 the men qualified for their first participation with one win and two draws in the preliminary round for the quarter-finals, in which they were defeated by Ghana 2-4 after extra time. They did better then in 2004. The quarterfinals were reached again with two preliminary round victories. After a 3-2 win over South Korea it went to the semi-finals. Here they defeated Iraq 3-1. In the final Paraguay then defeated Argentina 0-1, but had won Paraguay's first Olympic medal.
Winter games
Paraguay's Olympic winter debut took place in Sochi in 2014. The first female winter Olympic athlete in her country was freestyle skier Julia Marino on February 11, 2014 .
Youth games
Five young athletes, two boys and three girls, competed in athletics, swimming, table tennis and tennis at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . Tennis player Diego Galeano lost the game for the bronze medal in doubles with # m Venezuelan Ricardo Rodríguez .
In 2014 in Nanjing , ten Paraguayan athletes, four boys and six girls, took part. They competed in athletics, table tennis, swimming, beach volleyball, horse riding and rowing. The show jumper Valeria Jiménez won the silver medal with the mixed team. This medal is not listed in Paraguay's medal table. The rower Alejandra Alonso reached place 6 in the single, the swimmer Matias Chaparro over 200 meters back place 8.
