Olympic history of Djibouti

Djibouti , whose NOK ( Comité Olympique Djiboutien ) was founded in 1983, has been sendingathletes to the Summer Olympicssince it was recognized by the IOC in 1984. Only in 2004 was there no participation. The small East African state, which became independent in 1977, never took part in the winter games.
Overview
The first Olympians in Djibouti were the marathon runners Djama Robleh, Ahmed Salah and Omar Abdillahi Charmarke on August 12, 1984 in Los Angeles . Four years later in Seoul , Ahmed Salah was able to win the first and so far (as of 2017) only Olympic medal in a marathon. Salah crossed the finish line in third place and won the bronze medal. A sailing athlete from Djibouti took part for the first time in Seoul.
In 1992 in Barcelona judoka competed for the first time. The 800-meter runner Roda Ali Wais was the first woman in Djibouti to take part in the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. In 2004 Djibouti refrained from participating in the Athens Games .
In 2008 in Beijing , the country returned to the Olympic stage. In 2012 in London a swimmer in the country was used for the first time. The athlete Moomin Gala reached a final in the 5000 meter run, in which he achieved 13th place. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , Gala switched to the marathon route and came in 12th. Ayanleh Souleiman qualified for the 1500 meter final and finished fourth there.
IOC member
With Aïcha Garad Ali , Djibouti has a member of the IOC. The former national handball player and trainer Garad Ali, who has been President of the Djiboutian NOC since 2005, was elected an IOC member in 2012.
