The NOK of Azerbaijan , the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan , was founded in 1992 and recognized by the IOC in 1993 . Azerbaijan has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1996 and the Winter Olympics since 1998. Athletes from Azerbaijan competed for the Soviet Olympic team from 1952 to 1988 during the Soviet Union . In 1992 Azerbaijani athletes were integrated into the team of the CIS . Young athletes have taken part in all the Summer Youth Olympic Games that have been held so far.

Overview

Summer games

Azerbaijan first competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics as an independent state. The athletes participated in the sports of track and field, boxing, weight lifting, wrestling, judo, shooting, fencing, swimming and diving. At the following summer games, Azerbaijani participants competed in the sports of taekwondo and gymnastics (from 2004), horse riding (from 2008), canoeing, cycling and rowing (from 2012), as well as archery and triathlon (from 2016).

The first Olympians were on July 19, 1996, the wrestlers Tahir Sahidow and Wilayet Agayev. Two days later, Irada Ashumova, the first woman in Azerbaijan, took part in the Olympic Games.

The freestyle wrestler Namiq Abdullayev managed to win the first medal for his country in 1996 in Atlanta with a silver flyweight. In 2000 he was Olympic champion in bantamweight. The first Olympic victory for Azerbaijan, at the same time the first medal win for a woman, was achieved a week earlier by the sports shooter Zemfira Meftahatdinova, who won the skeet shooting. The boxer Vüqar Ələkbərov won bronze in the middleweight division.

In 2004 the wrestler Fərid Mansurov was Olympic welterweight champion of the Greco-Roman style. In boxing, Fuad Aslanov won the flyweight and Ağası Məmmədov won the bantamweight bronze. The sport shooters Irada Aschumowa with the sport pistol and Zemfira Mefathadtinowa also won bronze in the skeet shooting. In weightlifting, Turan Mirzayev was ranked 4th in the lightweight category. The Taekwondoin Raschad Achmadov just lost his fight for bronze in the middleweight division.

2008 in Beijing the judoka Elnur Məmmədli became Olympic champion in the lightweight. Three medals were won by the wrestlers. In the Greco-Roman style, Rövşən Bayramov won silver in featherweight. In freestyle, Xetaq Qazyumov won bronze in the heavyweight division. Vitali Rəhimov , originally the winner of the silver medal in the lightweight Greco-Roman style, was subsequently disqualified by the IOC in November 2016 for doping. In the women's category , Mariya Stadnik won bronze in the freestyle flyweight division. Further bronze medals won the judoka Movlud Miraliyev in the light heavyweight division and the boxer Şahin İmranov in the featherweight division.

The wrestlers won seven of the ten medals that Azerbaijani athletes could win in London in 2012. In the freestyle Toğrul sgərov in the lightweight and Şərif Şərifov in the light heavyweight Olympic champion. Xetaq Qazyumov again won bronze in the heavyweight division. In the Greco-Roman style Rövşən Bayramov won again silver in the featherweight and Emin Əhmədov bronze in the middleweight division. In the women's category, Mariya Stednik won silver in the flyweight division and Julija Ratkewitsch won bronze in the lightweight division. The boxers Teymur Məmmədov in the heavyweight and Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov in the super heavyweight as well as the weightlifter Valentin Xristov in the bantamweight won further bronze medals . In athletics, the native Ethiopian Hayle İbrahimov took 9th place over 5000 meters. The gymnast Alija Garayeva was fourth in the individual evaluation of rhythmic gymnastics. The canoeists Sergij Referenzlij and Maxim Prokopenko took 4th place in the two-man Canadians over 1000 meters. In rowing, Aleksandar Aleksandrov reached the final in the single and was fifth.

The most successful participation based on the number of medals took place in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. 18 medals were won, half of them in wrestling. The only Olympic victory was achieved by Taekwondoin Radik İsayev in the heavyweight division. Milad Beigi in the welterweight and in the women's Patimat Abakarova in the flyweight both won bronze. In freestyle wrestling, Toğrul Əsgərov won the welterweight division and Xetaq Qazyumov won the heavyweight division each silver. Bronze went to Hacı Əliyev in the featherweight, Cəbrayıl Həsənov in the middleweight and Şərif Şərifov in the light heavyweight. In the Greco-Roman style Rəsul Çunayev won the welterweight and Sabah Shariati in the super heavyweight each bronze. In the women's category, Mariya Stadnik took silver in the flyweight division. In the featherweight division, Nataliya Sinişin won bronze. In judo, Rustam Orujov won silver in the lightweight and Elmar Gasimov in the light heavyweight division. The Cuban native Collazo Sotomayor , a nephew of the high jump Olympic champion Javier Sotomayor , also won silver in the light welterweight division. In the middleweight division, Kamran Şahsuvarlı took bronze. The canoeists were also able to contribute two medals. Valentin Damyanenko won silver over 200 meters in the Canadians single. Inna Osypenko-Radomska won bronze over the same distance in a single kayak. She competed for Ukraine in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Winter games

Azerbaijan was represented for the first time in 1998 in Nagano at the Winter Games. The first winter Olympic team consisted of four figure skaters. The first winter Olympians on February 8, 1998 were pair skaters Inga Rodionova and Alexandr Anitschenko. Alpine ski racers have also been taking part since 2002.

Youth games

Youth Summer Games

Twelve young athletes, eleven boys and one girl, took part in the first Youth Summer Games in Singapore in 2010 . They competed in boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, taekwondo and canoeing. Eight medals, five gold and three silver medals were won. Youth Olympic champions were the Greco-Roman wrestlers Murad Bazarov in the flyweight and Elman Muktarov in the bantamweight, the freestyle wrestler Ali Magomedabirov in the heavyweight, the freestyle wrestler Patimat Bagomedova in the lightweight and the weightlifter Nischat Rachimow in the lightweight. Silver won the freestyle wrestler Kanan Guliyev in the bantamweight and the boxers Salman Əlizadə in the light flyweight and Elvin Isayev in the featherweight.

The Azerbaijani youths were even more successful with twelve medals at the second Summer Youth Games , which were held in Nanjing in 2014 . This time, 21 athletes, 13 boys and eight girls, took part. They competed in boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, judo, shooting, archery, athletics, swimming, and rowing. Gold won the freestyle wrestlers Teymur Mamedov in the middleweight and Iqbal Hajizada in the heavyweight, the Greco-Roman wrestler Islambek Dadov in the light heavyweight, the boxer Rüfət Hüseynov in the flyweight and the Taekwondoin Said Guliyev in the light heavyweight. Silver won the Greco-Roman wrestler Jabbar Najafov in the bantamweight, the freestyle wrestler Leyla Gurbanova in the lightweight, the judoka Natiq Gurbanli in the flyweight, the judoka Leyla Aliyeva in the flyweight, the taekwondoin Ceren Ozbek in the flyweight and the rower Boris Yotov in the single.
