Aleksandar Aleksandrov ( Bulgarian Александър Александров Alexandar Alexandrow ; born April 9, 1990 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian rower who has competed for Azerbaijan since 2010 . He is a two-time Olympian and a two-time medalist at European rowing championships .
Career
Aleksandrov started rowing in Bulgaria in 2003 and quickly enjoyed success. At the young age of 15, he took part in the Junior World Rowing Championships for the first time in 2005 , where he was unable to reach the A final with his also young partner Georgi Boschilow . In another participation in the Junior World Championships in 2006 , Aleksandrov won a silver medal in the singles for Bulgaria . At the Junior World Championships in 2007 he was able to win the gold medal in one. At the Junior World Championships in 2008 he also won the single title. From the entry into the U23 age group in 2009, he also took part in the U23 World Championships until 2012 and won another gold and silver medal for Azerbaijan.
In the open age group, Aleksandrov was used for Bulgaria from 2007. In one, he gained his first experience at the Rowing World Cup in Munich and at the European Championships in Poznan, where he won the bronze medal. He completed his last international championship participation for Bulgaria at the European Championships in 2009 .
For the 2010 season, Aleksandrov moved to Azerbaijan. There, at the instigation of President İlham Əliyev, an Olympic training center from the Soviet era was renovated and opened in Mingəçevir for the equivalent of 38 million euros, for which international top athletes from various sports were bought with state money. Aleksandrov moved as one of four Bulgarian rowers to Azerbaijan, trained there under the German coach Rüdiger Hauffe and took on citizenship.
From a sporting point of view, Aleksandrov made the leap into the top sculler world class in Azerbaijan. He qualified at the 2011 World Rowing Championships with an 11th place in the single for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he reached the finals and finished fifth overall. The following year he was also fifth at the European Championships , but he just missed the World Cup final. From 2014 Aleksandrov rowed regularly with Boris Yotov in double sculls , the duo won the silver medal at the European Championships behind the Lithuanian selection. Aleksandrov returned to the world championships in the single and finished 6th. After subsequently failing to participate in the European rowing championships in 2015 in the single with a 14th place, he concentrated with Yotov on the double scull and qualified this boat class for Azerbaijan a seventh place at the 2015 World Championships for the 2016 Summer Olympics . With 13 teams started, the duo only managed 12th place overall in Rio de Janeiro.
In the new Olympic cycle, Aleksandrov returned to the one and reached the final at the 2017 European Championships with sixth place .
Aleksandrov's height is 1.89 m with a competition weight of around 94 kg.
