Mingəçevir , German also Mingachevir (formerly Russian Мингечаур Mingetschaur ), is the fourth largest city in Azerbaijan with its population of 104,500 (as of 2014) . Mingəçevir is the fourth city in the country in terms of its economic potential and population and is a center for energy and industry, science, education and culture.

history

Mingəçevir was founded in 1948 on the Poti – Baku railway line and initially built primarily by German prisoners of war. In the city there was a prisoner of war camp 444 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

economy

Mingəçevir is a purely industrial city, which essentially consists of prefabricated housing in the Soviet style. It is also known as the city of energy workers, as there are two large power plants in it; a hydropower plant on the Mingəçevir reservoir of the Kura and a thermal power plant powered by natural gas.

traffic

The city has a train station on the Poti – Baku railway line.

Culture

The city is home to the football club Kür-Nur Mingəçevir , Azerbaijani runner-up from 2004.
