Qubadlı is a rayon in Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Qubadlı . The rayon has been occupied by Armenia since the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1993 , the Armenian name is Kashunik .

Qubadlı Rayon

The district has an area of ​​802 km². The area belongs to the Lesser Caucasus , the Karabakh highlands. The Vorotan and Hakari rivers flow through the rayon .

history

Up until the first half of the 18th century, Qubadli was mostly populated by Armenians , then by Azerbaijani tribes and Kurds . The area was part of the Republic of Red Kurdistan from 1923 to 1930 , then the Zangelan District.

In 1993, the district was occupied by Armenia in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh , which had split off from Azerbaijan . Qubadli is not claimed by Armenia, but is still controlled by the Armenian army as a buffer zone between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

population

According to Azerbaijani data, 37,400 people lived in 95 settlements in the rayon in 2009. After the invasion of the Nagorno-Karabakh troops , a large part of the population was expelled.

economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. Grain, wine and tobacco are grown and cattle and silkworms are raised. There are dairies, weaving mills and wineries.

Culture and sights

There are sacred grottos in the Kavur Caves and a 5th century tower near the village of Muradkhanli. At Aliushagi is the Geygala tower and two mausoleums at Damirchilar.
