Goranboy is a rayon in Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Goranboy . The southern part of the area was an independent Shahumyan rayon during the Soviet era and was mostly populated by Armenians until the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict . It is claimed by the neighboring Nagorno-Karabakh Republic as part of the Shahumyan Province . A small area on the border has been occupied by the Armenian army since the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1993 . The disputed area is still mined and the situation is tense, there is a strong military presence in the district.

The rayon has an area of ​​1791 km². Foothills of the Greater Caucasus extend into the area . There are deposits of petroleum , gypsum and clay.
