Quba (Rayon)
Quba is a rayon in northern Azerbaijan , on the northeast flank of the Greater Caucasus . The capital of the rayon is the city of Quba . The rayon has an area of 2,610 km² and 151,000 inhabitants. There are 155 villages and two larger settlements, Gonagkend and Qırmızı Qəsəbə .
politics
The governor of Quba is Əliyev Ziyəddin (as of December 2017), in 2012 this was Rauf Həbibov .
economy
The region is known for growing apples and other types of fruit. Sheep are raised on the mountain slopes and their wool is processed in the local industry. Carpets are produced in the city of Quba .
population
87,000 Azerbaijanis , 54,000 Lesgians (36%) and 6,000 Jews (4%) live in the region . It is especially Azerbaijani and Lezgi spoken. 94% of the population are Muslim .
Some of the Azerbaijani mountain Jews also live in the Rajon , especially in the community of Qırmızı Qəsəbə (district of the Quba Rayon Administrative Center). The inhabitants of the village of Xınalıq , which is over 2000 meters high, have retained their Chinalugian language , which is named after the place and is almost only spoken there, due to its isolated location - the village has only been accessible by road since 2006.
history
The area of Quba belonged to the state of the Shirvan Shahs for a long time , later it was conquered with the support of the Persian Safavids .
After Nadir Shah's death in 1747, Quba formed an independent khanate under Hussein-Ali , the Quba Khanate . The khanate expanded in the second half of the 18th century and became the most powerful in northern Azerbaijan. Architectural monuments and ruins from this period have been preserved. In 1806 it was annexed by Russia .
Architecture and landmarks
In the city of Quba you can find the Dschuma Mosque (Cuma Məscid) and the Ardabil Mosque (Ərdəbil Mäuserscid) as well as old bathhouses. There are also 134 archaeological sites in the region, including the Zoroastrian temple at Xınalıq and the graves of Aghbil from the 16th century.
Furthermore, the waterfalls near Afurja, the Pirbanovsha caves and the mountain springs of Bulbalag are tourist destinations.
Personalities
Abbasqulu aga Bakikhanov , a writer, historian and philosopher of the 19th century, and the playwright Sakina Akhundzadeh are from the region.
